Bras d'Or Lakes Conservation
How You Can Help

The future of the Bras d'Or Lakes and Watershed depends upon our willingness to understand the consequences of our personal choices. Like the Bald Eagles that soar high above the Lakes, we must see beyond our own homes and businesses, and understand that we are all part of a larger community of plants and animals, all connected by the land and water that support us.
Every day we make choices that affect our neighbours, our community, and the other organisms that share our habitat. Our choice of detergent, the number of showers we take, and the amount of garbage we produce, are all small choices that seem insignificant until thousands of others do the same thing.

We are all living today with the consequences of past choices. Declining water quality, shoreline erosion, depleted fish stocks–these are some of the results of choices that have been made in the past.

It will take the right choices, and the passage of time, before the Atlantic Salmon return in larger numbers to our rivers. It will take time and choices before the herring and lobster populations recover. It will take time, choices, commitment, planning and monitoring, before our waters are once again uniformly pristine. However, this vision is within reach. Like the eagles who frequent these shores, we can become farsighted. The choice is ours to make.
